If you live in or near a wooded area, you’ve probably had some problems with ticks. Not only are these tiny bloodsucking arachnids incredibly irritating, but they are vectors of some potentially serious diseases. Fortunately, there are methods of organic tick control that should keep you safe this summer when you spend some time outdoors.
Use Organic Repellents
If you want to use a personal tick repellent to keep yourself safe, stick to organic products that contain ingredients such as cedar oil and other essential oils. You can also spray these on pet bedding, kennels, and anywhere you think ticks could be outdoors on your property. Never use anything containing chemicals as they may not be safe for you or your pets.
Keep Your Yard Neat
As with many other pests, you can control the tick population near your home by regularly mowing your lawn and keeping wood piles to a minimum. If you must keep firewood on hand, store it someplace cool and dry instead of outdoors where they can become infested with ticks and other pests.
Dress to Protect Yourself
While you should avoid going into areas that may contain ticks, it is sometimes unavoidable. If you must wander into such places, wear tight-fitting, light-colored clothing as this makes it easier to spot any ticks that may be on you. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to avoid getting any ticks on your skin.
Keep Host Animals Away
Deer, raccoons, rodents, and other wild mammals can all carry ticks, so do your best to keep them away from your property. Fences will keep the larger animals away, as will plants such as oak trees, false cypress, and magnolias. Essentual oils such as cedar oil can also keep rodents away from your property.Read more
